![]() ![]() He’s narrowed his college choices down to a handful of schools that are at the top, both academically and athletically, and plans to study chemistry. "This year I'll try to run in a lot more competitive races than I did last year." Kippy’s goals for his final high school track campaign include lowering his PR’s to 4:06 or better and going "well under 9 minutes" in the two mile. "I always get some initial name recognition, but on the other hand it’s hard to live up to to what he accomplished." And what’s it like being the son of perhaps the most famous runner to come out of that East African nation? "I don’t see myself in the same league as the world class runners back home in Kenya, but I like to think I’m working to get there," he says. I enjoyed it."Īfter living for nine months of the year in Fork Union, which he considers one of the best places in the world to run, Kippy returns home to Kenya for the summer, finding himself instantly surrounded by past, current and future distance stars. It was a very tough race, very competitive. At the nationals, he was in fifth place through 2.5 miles, but faded over the final stretch to place 15th. He also "loves" cross country, qualified for the Foot Locker nationals last fall by placing fifth in the South Regional, running 15:01 for the 5K course. "Running became more fun around then, and I realized I’d probably be better at that than other sports." Given his bloodlines, it’s no surprise he’s progressed rapidly, last year clocking times of 4:12 for the mile and 9:05 for the 3200m. Kippy only became serious about running in eighth grade after dabbling in other sports. ![]() "When you’d rather skip that long run in the rain or do a few less quarters on the track, it helps you get out there and do it." "The discipline factor is something most kids don’t have to deal with," says Kippy, adding that while it can make things mentally and physically tougher, it helps when facing tough workouts or races. That’s because he attends Fork Union Military Academy in the hills of central Virginia, following in the footsteps of older brother Martin, who graduated in 1990.
